Students take down notes as INTACH members brief them about the Marundeeswarar temple at Thiruvanmiyur on Monday.

CHENNAI: If Thiruvanmiyur got its name after sage Valmiki, author of Ramayana, who is said to have lived in this pocket for some years, then there certainly are many more untold stories of places in the city long enough for an essay.

Fox History and Entertainment in association with Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) launched ‘My City My History’ here on Monday. The nationwide programme encourages school students to pen a 750-word essay on an interesting and an untold historical story about their city, thus taking history beyond textbooks.

“Five winners get an opportunity to present their story on the channel,” said Sudha Sadhanand, vice-president, programming, Fox History and Entertainment. Entries can be either in English or Hindi and judges would look for factual correctness and composition of the story. The competition is open to children between 11 and 15 years, and should be submitted either to INTACH or Fox History at http://www.foxhistory.com/mycity before December 31.

To launch the event in the city a heritage walk was organised for schools students. Around 35 children from 11 schools guided by S. Suresh, Tamil Nadu State Convenor of INTACH, visited historical landmarks such as Marundeeswarar temple, Santhome Bascilla, Fort St. George and Royapuram Police Station to listen and write some untold stories.
